El Salvador's tallest volcano is accessible every month of the year. However, selecting the right season and arriving early ensures you get clear views of the acidic crater lake and secure your spot in a guided group.
What is the best season to hike?
The dry season runs from November to April.
These months offer the best chance for clear skies at the 7,812-foot summit. Rain is minimal, which keeps the 4.3-mile trail dry and stable. During the rainy season, clouds often obscure the turquoise crater lake.
What time do daily hikes start?
Groups leave Cerro Verde National Park at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM daily.
You cannot hike independently. You must join an official local guide. These two morning slots are the only times groups depart.

When should I arrive at the park?
Plan to arrive before 9:30 AM.
The parking lot fills quickly. Arriving early gives you 30 minutes to pay the $3.00 to $6.00 entry fee, use the restrooms, and meet your guide. If you take the 248 public bus, it drops you off right before the first hike begins.
How long does the hike take?
The guided hike takes 3 to 4 hours round trip.
Expect 1.5 to 2 hours of uphill walking with an elevation gain of 1,532 feet. The descent takes another 1.5 to 2 hours. Groups usually return to the Cerro Verde base camp between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Should I book an early tour?
Yes, booking a tour guarantees your transport and guide arrangements.
Private and small group tours often leave San Salvador or Santa Ana between 5:15 AM and 6:00 AM. This early start ensures you beat the crowds and join the first hiking group up the volcano.

When is the best time for Lake Coatepeque?
Visit the lake in the afternoon directly after your hike.
Most hikers finish the volcano trail early in the afternoon. Head straight to the neighboring caldera lake for lunch. The afternoon is ideal for a boat tour or relaxing by the water.
